Fring, Out!

One neat thing about N82 is that it's very mobile net savvy in a relatively small package. After getting more familiar with the phone, I decided to explore about the internet calling feature. On paper Fring only consumes data packets and leaves the voice channel alone. Sounds like a good usecase in a roaming situation as long as I have WiFi access, in hotels and airports. A few minutes into it though, I removed the app in disgust.
As some of the reviews mentioned, Fring imported the phone book. But what I didn't know was it also imported all the call history. And even though I cleared the history list, it refilled the list every time the application started. No opt-out option. Annoyance 1.
Annoyance 2 happened when I made skype calls. It required way too many clicks to call someone on my contact list: cellular call or skype call, input box with the phone number, and manually added the international signature '+'. Then call. It required to add the international dialing signature '+' to every number, regardless of calling international or domestic numbers. The app already knew my phone number so it could have figured out whether that was a domestic or long distance call. In addition, annoyance 3, Fring gave no option to let the user just enter and call a number. It has to be called either from the phone book or the skype contact list.
However, what topped it all was it changed my phone preferences [03/25/2008: it was the installation changed the preferences]. It increased my ringtone volume to almost full, shut off vibrate, set the ringtone for repeated play and turned on the warning tone. Bottom line, if you change my settings, you are sooo going home!

The binary was Fring92.sis.

PS. A lot of friends have asked me about iSkoot. I don't give a second thought about them because its business case is just flawed. The 2 biggest usecases of VoIP are to avoid expensive long distance and roaming minutes. iSkoot uses both voice minutes and data to make a call. Why would I want that?!!

Hi 眼望望

My name is Roy and I am with fring team.

First of all, I wanted to thank you for your insights and feedback on our app (it's really valuable). I am taking your points and will discuss them to with our product team.

Also, regarding the address book, we're simply displaying the internal address book for your convenience (it's an easier way to make SIP or SkypeOut calls) - YET, at any time you can disable it by clicking 'Options' --> 'Settings' --> Hide phone contacts :)

Second, actually Yes, you can call a Skype contact by clicking 'Options' --> Call --> Skype contact. But you can also just use the green button, same as a regular call on your handset. Regarding your comment about the "+": There are a few ways to download fring and therefore we don't always know your phone number, also, in some cases it is hard to identify what's the country code and what's the phone number, we thought that it would be easier to add the + to the number. Note that if you make a SkypeOut call to a contact from your address book and change the number to the int. format, fring will remember that for the next time you try to call the same contact.

You're right, calling a GSM number from within fring is s on our (long) to-do list. In the meantime you can just highlight a contact --> Choose 'Call' and enter the number you wish to call.

Clearly, The ringtone issue sounds like a bug. I'll forward it to our QA team for further tests and let you know what's with that.

again, thanks for the detailed insights :)

Roy, I have re-installed Fring to confirm the details and I have made the corrections to my blog accordingly.

1. Phonebook. I think importing the phone book is fine. The problem I had was I should be able to opt-out importing the call history. Once the user decides to clear the list, it shouldn't have re-imported the whole thing again.
Hmmm while we are on the phone book topic, it would be nice if it can show only 1 entry for each contact and use scroll left/right to select the numbers. Think it's more ergonomic.

2. Still too many clicks. Click option. Click Call. Click Skype. Click the green button. But you are right. It does remember the '+' even after the app restarted. Still would be nice if it can figure it out. The 'Show My User id' (under option) shows what number I have registered. It should be a big signal there.

3. Ringtone preference. The preference is changed upon installation. Once I manually set them back, Fring doesn't change them again. It's still a bug but I think the scope is now smaller.

Misc.
Contact search. The search bar at the bottom defaults searches in English. It should be consistent with the phone that '#' can change the language input.

Language. It has 2 Chinese options on the phone. I presume it's traditional and simplified. But no matter which one I select, it defaults it to the middle one and it's always simplified.

Thanks again for the comment! Keep up the work!
